* All about SPICE (who, what, why, how and research & scholarship activities)

WHO + WHAT

  • SPICE = Students and Practitioners for Interprofessional Collaboration and Education
  • SPICE brings together health professional students, clinical faculty and local providers from multiple institutions in California's Central Valley to learn and work together to improve the health of our community.
  • Health disciplines represented by participants in SPICE activities during 2019-2020:
    • Pharmacy, nursing, kinesiology/sports medicine, public health, recreation therapy, nutrition, psychology, anthropology, social work, physician's assistant, pre-med, biology, etc.
  • Goals:
    • To promote interprofessional learning with, from and about each other’s roles and responsibilities in the health care team
    • To learn how to critically evaluate journal articles together and apply evidence-based practices to patient care
    • To discuss how we can apply our learnings to collectively improve patient care in the Central Valley
    • To collaborate on projects to improve the health and health literacy of the people in our community (i.e., through a patient health education newsletter, naloxone training workshop, etc.)

WHY + HOW

  • To better prepare health professionals for functioning together in effective interprofessional health care teams, by:
    • Improving interdisciplinary communication skills
    • Understanding of the roles and scope of practice of other disciplines
    • Improving relationships with other health professionals
    • Developing mutual trust and respect
    • Feeling more empowered to contribute during clinical rounds
  • Because we care about the people that we seek to serve in the Central Valley
  • Because interprofessional collaboration is a key component in addressing the opioid and mental health crises
